Oral minoxidil for hair loss
Medically reviewed byClay Buchanan, MD·Last reviewed September 2026
Low-dose oral minoxidil is used off-label for hair loss in men and women when a clinician determines it is appropriate. It is taken as a small daily tablet and requires a review of your heart and blood-pressure history first.
Who it may suit
People who find topicals messy or who haven’t responded to them sometimes try low-dose oral minoxidil under clinician supervision.
What to watch for
Increased body hair and, less commonly, fluid retention or a faster heartbeat. Your intake screens for relevant history.
Frequently asked
Is it safe long-term?
Low-dose use is generally well tolerated under supervision. Your clinician monitors you.
